Staffordshire County Championships 1st Weekend
Friday, 12 March 2010 20:14

No less than TEN gold medals were won by Newcastle swimmers over the course of the first weekend of the 2010 Staffordshire County Championships at Wolverhampton, with a great many silver and bronze medals.

In the forefront of the hunt for podium places for the girls was Rachael Kelly, who plundered a whole host of medals and awards during an action-packed weekend. Rachael (16) took gold medals in her own age group in the 50 Fly, 200 Free, 200 IM, 400 Free and 800 Free, while also claiming silver medals in the 50 Back, 100 Back and 200 Back. Rachael also picked up the Junior and Senior Championship trophies for the 50 Fly and 200 Free.

Newcastle’s other gold medal winner for the girls was Rebecca Twardochleb (11) who showed the greatest desire to win in the 100 Breast, as she claimed first in a photo-finish that saw the top four swimmers separated by just 0.57 of a second!

Emily Shaw (17) hasn’t been training too much recently, after taking her latest coaching exams, but she still managed to bring home three silver medals, in the 50 Back, 50 Fly and 100 Back! Also in silver medal form was Zelie Quinn (10) who picked up a fine second placed finish in the 50 Backstroke.

Our youngest competitor at the Championships was Grace Colclough (9) and she made good on her promising form with two excellent bronze medals, in the 50 Fly and 50 Back. Well done Grace and hard luck to her sister Amy who despite still being 11 has to compete in the 12 year-old age group this year and only just missed a medal by a fraction of a second in the 200 IM.

Our two other bronze medals of the first weekend for the girls came from Louise Edge (13) who won her award in the 100 Breast, and Jemma Causley who picked up a bronze in the Girls 17+ 50 Fly event.

Marcus Williamson (13) competed in most events over the first weekend and came away with a fine collection of medals, including gold in the 50 Free, silvers in the 100 Free and 100 Fly, and then bronze medals in the 50 Breast, 100 IM and 200 Breast!

Addison Brown (17) claimed the gold medal in the 200 Breast and picked up the Senior Championship award with it. Addison then also added bronze medals in the 50 Breast and 100 IM events.

Alex Gough (16) picked up the gold medal in the 400 IM, also earning the Junior and Senior Championship trophies into the bargain. Alex also added a silver medal in the 100 IM.

Our other gold medal for the Boys was won by Haydn Adelburgh (18), who came home first in the Boys 17+ 50 Breast event. In fact, Haydn, Alexander Dawson (with the silver medal) and Addison Brown completed a Newcastle ASC 1-2-3 in the Boys 17+ 50 Breaststroke!

In amongst the medals was Liam O’Mahoney (15) who picked up a silver medal in the 100 IM and also added bronze medals in the 50 Free and 100 Free to complete a productive weekend.

Along with Alexander Dawson’s second place finish in the 50 Breast, two other silver medals were added, by Dave Henshall in the 17+ 100 Fly and by Aaron Nash (10) in the Boys 50 Breast.

Completing the medal haul for the boys was Sam Winton (15) who did superbly well to take three bronze medals – in the 50 Breast, 200 Breast and 200 Fly.

All in all this was a good weekend for Newcastle, after some major changes at the club in the past year. Having set a high standard in the first weekend of the Championships let’s hope our swimmers can do likewise in the second and bring another impressive clutch of medals back to Newcastle!
